As we go through the Mother’s Day UK History & Origin, the UK was the first country in the world to commemorate Mother’s Day in the early 17th century. In the era of 1600s in England, a Mothering Sunday was celebrated yearly on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor mothers. After a prayer service in church to honor Virgin Mary, kids brought gifts as well as flowers to pay tribute to their own moms.

On the occasion, servants, apprentices & other employees staying away from their houses were encouraged by their employers to visit their mothers and meanwhile honor them. As per the old tradition kids brought gifts for their mothers & make a special fruit cake or fruit-filled pastry which named a simnel.

The custom of celebrating Mothering Sunday died out completely by the 19th century. However, the day came into existence again after World War II, when the US servicemen carried out the custom & commercial enterprises that used it as a festival for sales.
